Let’s discuss this topic in detail and learn more about inner child healing.

What is inner child healing?

As I mentioned above, everyone has an inner child within. However, if you are not familiar with the term “inner child”, then it is possible you will not understand inner child healing either. That’s why I will explain what the inner child is first, instead of inner child healing.

Inner Child

During our childhood, whatever we go through, like love, care, abusive behaviour, injustice, or a dysfunctional family, etc, always remains in our mind. Those memories become part of our subconscious mind, whether we want them or not often impact on our adulthood. Those memories are known as the inner child.

Healing the inner child

Key signs your inner child needs healing

If you went through toxic experiences in your childhood, and are confused if you need inner child healing or not.

Let’s discover key signs your inner child needs healing-

  •  Having big feelings about small things.
  • Self-sabotaging behaviours.
  • Unhealthy coping mechanisms.
  • A difficult relationship with your family.
  • Self-criticisms and low self-esteem.
  • Relationship issues
  • Mental, physical and emotional issues.

Heaving big feelings about small things

If you get angry when your friend is giving attention to someone else while talking to you, or you are overly sensitive even about little things. It is one of the big signs your inner child needs healing.

It is possible now you don’t remember why you are acting this way but old memories are stored in your subconscious mind. Those bitter experiences of childhood always trigger your adult self to behave accordingly.

Self-sabotaging behaviours

Have you ever felt why your relationship is not working? Why are you not pursuing your dream when it is the only thing you want to do? Procrastinating things, whether important or not. You yourself become a barrier between you and your dreams by assuming something which is not even true or logical. These self-sabotaging behaviours reflect a wounded childhood. You continuously start to compare yourself with others in every aspect of your life.

Unhealthy coping mechanisms

Due to a lack of emotional support in your childhood by your family members, now you don’t ask for it. You have developed a strange habit of drowning in your own world, whether it’s playing video games, talking to strangers on social media, or just creating delusional stories in your mind. You don’t feel the need to be among people, or you are able to spend time alone. A child who was demanding attention, care and emotional support from people turned into someone who is fine alone even in hard times. This is also one of the major key signs your inner child needs healing.

A difficult relationship with your family

You feel misfit in your family because they were not there when you needed them the most in your childhood. You were underestimated, accused or abused by family members, so now you started to feel a misfit in your own family. Sometimes you gro,w but old memories of being criticised, injustice, and other traumatized experiences by family members can cause inner child wounds. These wounds bleed even when you grow up into an adult.

It becomes difficult for you to mix with your family. Neither you hate them nor you feel like belonging with them.

Self-criticism and low self-esteem

Overthinking, self-doubting and feeling low about yourself, no matter if you are highly skilled or one of the most beautiful people in the room. Due to bad childhood experiences, you start to criticise your adult self. This causes communication issues and social anxieties, too.

Relationship issues

Being in a love relationship but always surrounded by several insecurities leads to jealousy, possessive and dominating behaviour. You try to control your partner because you don’t want them to be snatched away from you by anyone else. This is normal in a relationship, but when you become too controlling and toxic, it is one of the signs your inner child needs healing.

Mental, physical and emotional issues

Mentally, you are unable to trust anyone around because you have a fear of being used by others. In your point of view, you are protecting yourself from this cruel world, but deep inside your inner child is trapped in old memories. In some cases, people develop physical issues like anxiety, eating disorders, sleeping disorders, OCD, migraine and chronic fatigue, etc., due to bad childhood experiences.

They don’t express their healthy fear, anger, anxiety, or pain with others. They feel nobody cares what they are going through, and to protect their own little world, they stop asking for help from others. When other people try to invade their personal spac,e they start to build walls.

Reparenting your inner self

Try to understand what your childhood self needs the most. After understanding the signs your inner child needs healing, provide all the emotional support, protection, love and care to your childhood self. Make it your daily routine and repeat some positive affirmations to yourself.

Journaling and letter writing

This is one of the popular ways of inner child healing, and I myself performed this during my healing phase. I highly recommend this method. Write a letter to your childhood self, whatever you have in your mind, just write it on a piece of paper and talk with your childhood self. Use all the lovely words your childhood self wants to listen to. Let them know how beautifully you are facing everything in your life bravely. Release every emotion on the piece of paper for your childhood self and if tears roll down your cheek, it’s a sign you are healing.

Playful expression

All the activities you enjoyed during childhood, such as colouring, sketching, playing any instrument, learning or cycling etc. Make those activities a part of your adulthood, too. I know many of you have busy life schedules, jobs, studies or dreams to pursue, but only 30 minutes in a day can change a lot.

Inner child healing meditation

This mediation I learned during my healing phase. I will guide you step by step below-

  • Choose a peaceful place where you can sit for a long time without any disturbance.
  • Take a picture of your childhood when you were small and innocent.
  • Look at that picture of you observing it for 5 minutes or 10, depending on you.
  • Now place the picture in front of you on the floor or table.
  • Sit in a comfortable position. in case you can’t sit for a long time, then you can perform meditation in a lying position.
  • Close your eyes softly.
  • Relax your body completely.
  • Now inhale air into your lungs through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
  • While inhaling, feel your positivity is coming into your body, and during exhalation, feel negativity, pain and suffering is leaving.
  • Repeat it 5-7 times, and now visualise your childhood self the same as you saw in the picture, standing in front of you. Scared, unloved, ignored and miserable looking at you.
  • Your childhood self is asking you why you have forgotten them in this world? Why are you not taking care of them? Why are you not loving them? Several questions are for you there.
  • Go near them and love the way a mother loves their child. Make them comfortable around you and wipe their tears. Reassure them you are there for them when no one else is.
  • Hug them and apologise for not being aware of their sufferings. Your apology should be sincere.
  • Now look at that kid who was crying before, scared and unloved. Now that the child is feeling comforted, loved and happy, looking at you with a huge smile on their face.
  • Now that the child is trusting you and grateful for the love you just gave.
  • Hug your childhood self with a promise that you will never forget them.
  • Slowly, slowly, bring your focus back to your breathing.
  • Inhale and exhale 5-7 times.
  • Open your eyes.
  • Place a childhood Picture on your desk or somewhere where you can see it from time to time.
